Take Care of My Cat pimping post!
Take Care of My Cat is an amazing South Korean film from 2001. I really love it, and requested it for Yuletide last year (sadly there is still no fic for it, at all) - I could talk about it for SO LONG but I will try not to. :)
It's a coming of age movie, about five best friends living in the city of Incheon a year after they graduated from high school. It's dramatic, sometimes tense, sometimes bleak, sometimes happy and uplifting, always really interesting. Some of the things I love about it:
-Strong, interesting, real characters, mostly women. And also intense, realistic female friendships, where people drift apart as well as getting closer, but in a totally organic way.
-Femslash! Most of the movie it's like, yeah, okay, I guess I could ship that? And then you get to the last five minutes and it is like !!!!! AMAZING. I can't talk about it without spoilers, so I won't, but... it's pretty incredibly slashy, if you're into such things. :)
-Tae-hee's adorable mittens!
-Also there is a KITTEN.
If you are interested in sources with chromatic characters and creators, it pretty much goes without saying that Take Care of My Cat is perfect. All the main characters are South Korean (two of Chinese descent), it's set in South Korea, and the creator is not only South Korean but also a woman. And it's a really good movie.
The trailer - it's pretty low quality, but it's the best I can find:
Pictures! (Apologies for the bad image quality/my terrible screencapping, I don't have access to any better source.)

This is Ji-young, arguably the protagonist. In high school she was one of the leaders of the group, very close to Hae-joo, but now things are changing. She lives with her grandparents (her parents are dead) in a shantytown and dreams of studying textile design overseas. She's a talented artist, but her current situation makes this dream almost impossible.

This is Hae-joo, the second of the main three. At first glance she seems the most successful of the five, as she has a good well-paid job working in a firm in Seoul. She can be cruel and patronising towards the friends she's left behind, and could easily have become an antagonist - but she's not, and as the film progresses we see that in fact her life is both troubled and complex.

This is Tae-hee. She comes from a fairly well-off background, unlike the others, and at the beginning of the film she is working at her father's day spa business for free. She suffers under his patronising, patriarchal strictures, however, and she dreams of escape and travelling the world. She's also very light-hearted and happy, despite everything, and seeing how she and Ji-young grow closer through the movie is also pretty cool. And she has the world's most adorable red mittens, sadly not appearing in this picture.

The twins, Ohn-jo and Bi-ryu, with Hae-joo in the middle. We don't see as much of them, though they're also really interesting characters. Where all the other characters are discontented with their lives, they seem happy to be together, selling home-made jewellery from street stalls. They're both fairly blunt and straightforward, with pretty dirty senses of humour. And they're apparently of Chinese descent, which isn't really explored that much in the film besides a short scene with their grandparents, but it's still really interesting.

And this is Tee Tee, the cat!

Tae-hee and Tee Tee, being adorable.

Ji-young and Hae-joo

Ji-young and Tae-hee, note Tae-hee's adorable mittens! I... I ship these two pretty hard. And by the end of the movie SO WILL YOU. :D

Ji-young and Tee Tee. TINY KITTEN PAW!

Tae-hee on a bus. Mobile phones + texting is a big theme in the movie, and we see their texts appearing in some pretty unusual places.
And because I know that this movie can be pretty hard to track down (US$27 on Amazon; also available on Netflix if you live in the US), I've uploaded it to megaupload. Files are split, use hjsplit to rejoin. It's 700MB total, .mp4, Korean with English subtitles. Not the best quality ever, but decent.
